A Renewed Focus for KPFT
by Duane Bradley

As we enter 2002, we stand at the threshold of a New Pacifica both nationally and here in Houston. During the past few years at KPFT, there has been elimination or marginalization of much news, information and public affairs programming while focus has shifted to music and the "Sounds of Texas."

My vision of KPFT’s future is as a radio station that renews its commitment to fulfilling the mission of the Pacifica Foundation, to being a "voice for the voiceless," to bringing the community back into its community radio station, to training volunteers how to produce quality radio programs. Effecting substantive change for the better in the city, state, nation and world we all share.

KPFT could and should be an outlet for the creative skills of those in the greater Houston area. It should be a place on the radio dial where people know they can tune in to hear not only the great genres of music not heard anywhere else but also where they can hear an alternative to the ever-decreasing sources of information and news. To encounter thoughtful analysis and in-depth discussion of issues routinely glossed over, if even covered elsewhere.

KPFT was built on the premise that volunteers from Houston were capable of doing good, substantive, alternative radio. KPFT was founded to bring a progressive outlook into Houston media and to help create a climate within which people could learn about each other, grow to appreciate and understand one another, and together, foster the notion that peace is possible.

You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one ...
