KPFT Programmer Larry Winters Addresses his Fans at Houston Radio Report
By Larry Winters
I want to thank you for your support for my show (Spare Change). I am not in
agreement with a lot of things that go on in the world, but manage to allow
the evolution of change to occur without losing the principles of equality and
dignity for others. You’re right about the playlists (at KPFT) and its "FM SOUND”.
But somehow that has opened the airways to many that can only begin to hear
the different tones available in this world.
I remember the struggles between the different factions of pseudo-intellectuals,
political and cultural agendas all trying to have their views expressed at various
times. I have seen the stagnation of programs and the narrowcast views being
repeated until they lose their purpose and aren’t an effective agent for change.
I recall a large poster, hung in a beautiful ornate oak frame in the lobby at
Ellis Unit I, that simply said, “BEWARE OF ZEALOTS”.
I do feel that change can continue to occur at KPFT but only if the number of
listeners continues to grow. I have been involved with KPFT since the late seventies
and started listening soon after they were bombed. I have seen the station’s
programming go through the West Coast phase, the East Coast phase, the African
phase, the Hispanic phase, the Gay phase, the gender phases; taking on socialist,
communist, or nearly any other political and dogmatic agenda known in this region
of the country.
I have no other purpose on the program that I do except promote equality through
free association, using the songs I choose to play. You may be right some of
those Dylan songs reek with depression, but look at what is going on, all these
people feeling so alone and desperate. Ah what the Hell, it’s all just Theater
and will not work if we don't have listeners from the "other side."
- Your friend and mine, LCW.
Larry Winters is host of the long- running folk music show, Spare Change,
airing every Saturday from 12-3 PM. He combines a relaxed sound with gentle
pokes at the powers that be. For the rest of you KPFT DJs that means HE HAS
A POINT-OF-VIEW, in addition to being able to load CDs into the player. Like
the man says above, Larry has seen it all in his time at KPFT.
